GRADE 4
Written in 1928, Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera tells the story of Macheath, an infamous criminal also known as “Mack the Knife,” who marries Polly Peachum, the daughter of entrepreneur Jonathan Peachum, who wants to have Macheath hung to protect his business. Composer Kurt Weill wrote the opera score originally for a chamber wind ensemble, including instruments such as accordion and banjo. In this arrangement based on Kurt Weill’s music for the opera, Brody has adapted Weill’s various themes, including Overture, The Ballad of Mack the Knife, Cannon Song and Finale, for the modern day concert band in this approachable yet engaging arrangement.
